I would imagine that love has been bringing couples to some fashion of formal union since the beginning of mankind. The cliché image of the hapless cave woman being clubbed over the head and dragged off to the groom’s cave leaps to mind. For all we know, it was the other way around.

Today, weddings are exponentially more civilized, or are they? Look at some of these recent news articles.

An argument erupted between the groom’s brother and a guest at the reception resulting in shots fired. As a result, 400 guests at the South African wedding reception were in a standoff with over 80 police officers. Local authorities were unable to arrest the shooter. The guests held the police at bay by throwing stones. Eventually a combat team had to be summoned from a distant city to quell the violence.

A Dakar, Senegal newspaper reported the death of a child bride (12 years old), forced to marry her 35 year-old cousin. The marriage consummation resulted in severe hemorrhaging and the poor girl died some 6 days later.

Four men were kidnapped from a wedding in Juarez, Mexico. They were found dead, in the bed of an abandoned pick-up truck, several days later.

Masked gunmen armed with automatic rifles and grenades attacked a wedding party in a Turkish village near Mardin. Forty four people were killed and many were injured. Reports suggested that the families of the bride and groom were feuding.

Christians are recovering from gunshot wounds to the chest suffered at a wedding in Lehore, Pakistan. It seems they were fired upon for refusing to convert to Islam. In metropolitan Lehore, people are increasingly reluctant to attend weddings. 6 recent attacks on wedding parties have taken the lives of 123 people.

More recently, model Katie Price’s wedding to cage fighter, Alex Reid, exploded in violence as photographers and security personnel came to blows. It is reported the melee began when photographers tried to force their way into Katie’s vehicle, in a feeding frenzy for more photos. Police, who were called to the scene to restore order, ultimately halted the brawl.

Romania’s, significant Gypsy minority coerces their children to marry when they reach puberty. This custom has been long tolerated by Romanian authorities, but recent events at the wedding of a 12 year-old girl and 14 year-old boy, has plunged the practice into the sunlight. It seems the 14 year-old boy jilted the hapless 12 year-old girl. The families of the bride and groom began a quarrel so heated, that several people were injured. Police arrested one man on attempted murder charges and are pursuing investigations of 4 other men on the same charge.

Has the human animal really progressed exponentially since the time of our prehistoric ancestors, or are we just better dressed, better fed and better armed? Certainly a questions to consider as you make the plans for the wedding of your dreams!

Kudos to those choosing to elope! Seems like a safer alternative to me.
