The process called dating is a way for two people to participate in activities together with the intent of getting to know each other better. Movies and television tend to portray the leading man with an aura of mystery and the tendency to avoid giving up too much about them in order to cultivate the tough guy image; but the best advice when dating is allowing her to get to know you. Not only will she appreciate your attempt at openness in communication, you will enjoy the conversation more as well.
That is not to say that you need to dump your entire history of disastrous relationships on her either, as this has a tendency to make anyone want to run away, but allowing her to get to know you- the real you. While you might think that a sophisticated air of mystery is appealing to women, she is more than likely thinking that you have something to hide or that you are just plain not interested in her. Giving her these types of signals is a great way of ensuring that she is busy the next time you call.
The main factor in developing and maintaining a good relationship is the early establishment of open and honest communication. Communication can be defined as a two-way process in which there is an exchange of thoughts, feelings or ideas towards a common goal or direction; In this case, an enjoyable date and possibly the beginning or building of a relationship. Notice the “two-way process” which means that the only way you can have real communication between you is allowing her to get to know you.
Society has seen fit to reinforce the image of modern man that has been presented by the mass media with the strong, silent type being most desirable. If you do open up, allowing her to get to know you, this is seen as a sign of weakness and vulnerability and should be avoided at all costs. These ideas couldn’t be more wrong, and if you need proof, just look at the divorce rate in this country. The time to get to know someone is before you are married and marriage counselors give lack of communication as one of the primary causes of problems in a relationship.
What does any of this have to do with me? We just started dating. The question is fair enough and the answer is that any relationship that is built on open and honest communication right from the start has the best chance of success. The other side of the coin is that you will both have more fun together, even if you are just casually dating, if you get to know her and by allowing her to get to know you. It is the absolute best way to avoid the “I thought you liked romantic comedies!” or the “you mean you don’t really like monster truck rally’s?” conversations that could come after dating a few times and each thinking the other really enjoys what you’ve been doing. Talk about awkward!
